The Mapmaker of the Mind: The Enduring Legacy of Dr. David R. Hawkins

Dr. David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D. (1927–2012), was a figure whose life and work seamlessly spanned the disparate realms of clinical science and profound spiritual mysticism. A nationally renowned psychiatrist and physician, he broke ground in the conventional medical world before devoting the latter half of his life to pioneering research into the very nature of human consciousness.

His unique contribution to the world is not merely a collection of books, but a holistic framework—a literal map—that attempts to chart the journey of the human spirit from suffering to enlightenment. Hawkins’s core assertion, based on decades of consciousness research, is that all of human experience, whether a feeling, a thought, a book, or an entire civilization, possesses a subtle, measurable energy field that can be calibrated on a logarithmic scale. His teachings provide both a theoretical understanding of existence and a practical pathway—the process of surrender—to elevate one’s own level of awareness and, consequently, the entire world.

Biography: From Pioneering Psychiatrist to Spiritual Teacher

Born in 1927, David R. Hawkins began his professional life in the rigorous world of conventional medicine. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and graduated from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1953. For over two decades, he maintained a distinguished career in New York, where he made pioneering clinical breakthroughs in psychiatry.

His practice, which included the role of Medical Director of the North Nassau Mental Health Center and Director of Research at Brunswick Hospital on Long Island, was one of the largest in the United States. In this period, Hawkins was a trailblazer in orthomolecular psychiatry, the practice of using high-dose nutrients to treat mental illness. His expertise led him to co-author the groundbreaking book, Orthomolecular Psychiatry: Treatment of Schizophrenia, with Nobel Laureate chemist Linus Pauling in 1973. This work initiated a new field within the discipline and earned him numerous accolades, including the Huxley Award for the “Inestimable Contribution to the Alleviation of Human Suffering.” He was featured on major national television programs, including The Today Show and The Barbara Walters Show.

However, this scientific and professional success was paralleled by a deep, personal spiritual inquiry. Hawkins experienced profound subjective realizations and transformations, which he referred to as an “unexpected and shattering realization of the Oneness of All Existence” in midlife. This mystical experience fundamentally changed his perspective, dedicating the remainder of his life to bridging the gap between scientific understanding and spiritual truth. In 1983, he established the Institute for Spiritual Research, Inc., a non-profit organization, and later founded the Path of Devotional Nonduality in 2003, emphasizing compassion, humility, surrender, and unconditional love as the core truths shared by the world’s great spiritual traditions.

In recognition of his widespread humanitarian and spiritual contributions, Dr. Hawkins was knighted in 1996 by the Sovereign Order of the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem. He passed away peacefully in Sedona, Arizona, in 2012, at the age of 85.

Core Work: The Map of Consciousness

Dr. Hawkins’s most renowned and influential work is the Map of Consciousness®, first introduced in his best-selling book, Power vs. Force.

Description

To create this Map of Consciousness®, over 250,000 muscle testing calibrations spanning 30 years of multiple research studies were conducted by The Institute for Spiritual Research, Inc. Dr. Hawkins defined a range of values corresponding to levels of consciousness, including well-recognized attitudes and emotions. With a logarithmic scale of 1 to 1,000 and the Map of Consciousness® format that he developed, Dr. Hawkins explains the classification and characteristics of these energy fields to make them easily understandable and helpful in daily life.

It is important to realize that the calibration figures represent not an arithmetic but a logarithmic progression. Thus, the level 300 is not twice the amplitude of 150; it is 300 to the tenth power. An increase of even a few points represents a significant advance in power.

The ways the various levels of human consciousness express themselves are profound and far-reaching. Levels below 200 are detrimental to life in both the individual and society at large; those above 200 are constructive expressions of power. The decisive level of 200 is the fulcrum that divides the general areas of force and power from falsehood.

The Map of Consciousness® is included in Dr. Hawkins’ first nine books, the core of his work, as well as in the six-book Transcription series, transcribed from the 2002 lectures.

The line at 200 (Courage) is considered the critical pivot point. Below 200, consciousness is dominated by Force (destructive, negative, life-depleting); above 200, consciousness aligns with Power (constructive, positive, life-affirming). The Map serves as both a diagnostic tool and a blueprint for spiritual evolution, demonstrating that small increases in one’s calibration level yield exponential gains in personal power and positive influence on the world.

Dr. David Hawkins: Be the Field

Published Materials and Literary Works

Dr. Hawkins authored a prodigious body of work, consisting of over a dozen books that form a progressive series detailing the evolution of consciousness. The books are characterized by their clarity, systematic structure, and combination of scientific and mystical language.

Key Books

  • Power vs. Force: The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior (1995): This is the seminal work that introduced the Map of Consciousness to the public. It provides the intellectual framework and methodology (kinesiology) behind his research, exploring how everything in the universe carries a measurable, calibrated energy field.
  • Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender (2012): One of his most popular and practical books, this work focuses specifically on the technique of emotional “letting go” or surrender to release the negative feelings and blocks that keep one trapped in lower calibrated states.
  • The Eye of the I: From Which Nothing Is Hidden **(2001) / I: Reality and Subjectivity (2003): These books begin to shift the focus from the map itself to the process of Self-Realization and the experience of advanced states of awareness, detailing the subjective reality of the mystic.
  • Transcending the Levels of Consciousness: The Stairway to Enlightenment (2006): This volume offers a more in-depth exploration of the higher calibrated levels (Love, Joy, Peace, Enlightenment), serving as a detailed guide for those committed to the spiritual path.20
  • Healing and Recovery (2009): This book specifically applies the principles of consciousness to health and disease, explaining how one’s attitude and level of awareness directly influence the healing process.

Other Published Works

In addition to his main series, Dr. Hawkins published numerous other titles and audio recordings, including:

  • Truth vs. Falsehood
  • Discovery of the Presence of God
